On Friday, 30 January 2026, students from M5-5 and M5-6 embarked on their first field trip of the year to Our Tampines Hub, marking a purposeful and positive start to the school year. The outing to the hawker centre and Tampines Regional Library provided authentic opportunities for students to practise essential community skills in real-world settings.
Students demonstrated growing independence by making purchases independently, waiting for their turn, following community rules, and making personal choices.
The 30-minute journey to and from the venue was smooth, with students remaining seated, calm, and patient throughout the commute.
At the hawker centre, students confidently bought their own drinks, navigated a busy environment, and interacted appropriately with others. These hands-on experiences strengthened their social awareness and functional independence.
During the outing, one student experienced anxiety while crossing a bridge due to a fear of heights. With calm reassurance and the use of a simple “1 step, 2 step, 3 step” song, her teacher supported her through the challenge. With encouragement, she successfully crossed the bridge - a proud moment that reflected her resilience and growing confidence.
Some students also noticed the playground located within the library and expressed a strong wish to visit it. With the help of visual reminders, they were able to understand that it was not part of the day’s programme and transitioned smoothly to the next activity.
At Tampines Regional Library, students practised appropriate library behaviours, including keeping quiet, moving calmly, and respecting shared spaces. Each student had the opportunity to select books independently, reinforcing decision-making skills and a sense of ownership over their learning. Students followed library rules well and demonstrated consideration for others using the space.
This first field trip of the year provided a strong and encouraging start to the students’ learning journey. Students demonstrated growth in independence, emotional regulation, and community skills, making the experience both meaningful and rewarding.
