Our students recently embarked on an exciting learning journey to Punggol Regional Library on 5th March 2026, where they explored creative learning spaces designed to inspire curiosity, storytelling, and discovery. Accompanied by enthusiastic volunteers from Republic Polytechnic, who were recruited by SG Cares Volunteer Centre @ Geylang and Serangoon (operated by Care Community Services Society), students engaged in hands-on activities while practising important communication and social skills in a real-world environment.
During the visit, students explored the library’s unique learning zones, including Spark!Lab™, Storyteller Cove, and the World and Us Zone.
Sparking Creativity at Spark!Lab™
At Spark!Lab™, students stepped into a creative tinkering space where they were encouraged to think like inventors. Through hands-on activities, they experimented with different materials and explored how inventions can help solve real-world problems.
Beyond the creative process, students also demonstrated positive learning behaviours. They practised sharing materials, waiting patiently for their turn, and supporting one another during the activities. The experience encouraged students to take risks, explore new ideas, and understand that innovation often involves trial and error.
Becoming Story Creators at Storyteller Cove
During their visit to Storyteller Cove, students experienced how stories can come alive through interactive displays and digital storytelling tools. Surrounded by colourful installations, they were encouraged to use their imagination to create characters and develop simple story ideas.
Some students explored digital story-making tools, while others interacted with the physical story panels, discovering different ways stories can be expressed and shared.
This engaging environment provided valuable opportunities for students to practise communication and language skills, such as sharing ideas, responding to prompts, and expressing their thoughts about stories.
Accessible Collection
Students also visited the Accessible Collection section, which features a specially curated selection of about 3,000 English titles for children and adults with disabilities, their caregivers, and the wider community.
The collection includes Braille books with accompanying text for readers with visual impairments, as well as social stories, phonics books, and touch-and-feel books designed to support diverse learning needs.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore these materials and discover how books can be presented in different formats to make reading more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
Practising Communication and Social Skills
Beyond exploring the different learning spaces, the learning journey provided many opportunities for students to practise important life skills such as greeting the librarians and members of the public.
Students also demonstrated socially considerate behaviour by following library rules such as keeping their voices soft, walking calmly within the premises, and respecting shared spaces and materials.
In addition, students learned how to read and recognize environmental signage around the library including toilet signs, directional signs, and labels for different book sections. These experiences helped students develop greater independence and awareness when navigating public spaces.
The learning journey was a meaningful experience that allowed students to explore learning beyond the classroom while building confidence in communication and social interaction.
We would also like to extend our appreciation to the dedicated volunteers from Republic Polytechnic for their patience, encouragement, and support in helping our students have a positive and memorable experience.
We are proud of how our students represented the school during the trip and look forward to more enriching learning journeys that allow them to explore the community while developing important life skills.
