Embracing the Festival of Lights
In the weeks leading up to the Deepavali Celebration on 17 October 2025, students immersed themselves in a series of engaging activities during their Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons. They learnt about the significance of Deepavali and the values it upholds – light, goodness and knowledge. Students also enjoyed tasting traditional festive snacks such as murukku and papadum, exploring ethnic costumes, and taking part in art and craft activities, where they created crepe paper marigold garlands and Diya lamps. These pre-celebration activities helped set a joyful and festive tone, building excitement for the main celebration.
On the day of the event, the school community came together for a lively and enriching 1.5-hour celebration that was both vibrant and meaningful. The celebration featured a variety of booth activities that showcased the beauty and richness of Indian culture. At the Music and Dance booth, students explored traditional Indian musical instruments such as the Udukkai, Ghungroo, Tambourine, Damaru and Singing Bowl, moving joyously to rhythmic Indian beats. The Rangoli Sand Art booth offered an avenue for artistic expression as students created intricate and colourful rangoli patterns symbolising joy and prosperity. Meanwhile, the Photobooth captured wonderful memories, with students donning festive attire and radiant smiles.
Complementing the booth activities were in-class experiences that offered sensory and creative exploration. Students adorned themselves with henna and temporary tattoos, relaxed in a flower sensory bath filled with vibrant petals and soothing scents, and crafted colourful flower bead accessories. Each experience was thoughtfully designed to encourage hands-on learning while nurturing appreciation for cultural artistry and symbolism.
The Deepavali Celebration provided a valuable opportunity for students to embrace the festival’s values of light, goodness, and knowledge. It also served to strengthen the spirit of unity, inclusivity, and cultural appreciation within the school community. The event was a truly enlightening and joyous occasion, leaving students with lasting memories of joy, learning and unity.
