Our recent visit to Sunlove Senior Day Activity Centre (DAC) @ Eunos on 15 April 2026 was a truly enriching and heartwarming experience for our students.

While many students were initially hesitant to interact with new faces in an unfamiliar environment, the atmosphere quickly shifted. Through shared creative activities, warm smiles and conversation, our students moved past their nerves to form meaningful intergenerational connections.
The day was a beautiful reminder of the power of human connection that brought to life through three collaborative activities. They are upcycling old t-shirts into eco-friendly tote bags, canvas painting, and music and dance.
Transforming Old to New: Upcycling T-shirts
The upcycling activity was a wonderful lesson in giving old materials a new purpose. Working side-by-side, the students and Sunlove elderly transformed t-shirts into functional bags.
It was heartening to see the seniors offering guidance while the students eagerly learned new skills, with the workspace filled with an exchange of ideas and smiles throughout this creative process.

Masterpieces in the Making: Canvas Pointilism
In the canvas painting session, the focus shifted to the pointillism technique. Using cotton swabs to apply colourful dots, both groups joined forces to bring two large masterpieces to life.
The void deck buzzed with energy as the elderly offered encouragement and students experimented with the technique, culminating in a shared sense of pride as their vibrant trees took shape.
These activities did more than just create art; they highlighted a true spirit of community and the joy of working toward a common goal.

Music and Connection
The music and dance activities served as a fantastic icebreaker for many, bringing a lively and infectious energy to the visit. Students and seniors moved to familiar tunes as they clapped, swayed, and embraced the rhythm together.
Laughter filled the space as everyone let loose, breaking down the remaining formalities and celebrating the pure joy of the moment.

Newfound Friendships
While the crafts and music were engaging, the true heart of the visit lay in the quiet, shared moments between activities. Finding common ground through simple topics, such as a mutual love for chicken rice, served as a natural bridge that helped close the generational gap and sparked newfound friendships.
These interactions allowed students to develop essential life values. Through collaboration, the students cultivated a sense of empathy and respect that extends far beyond the classroom. The transition from their initial shyness to active, warm engagement was a clear demonstration of how this collaborative spirit boosted their social confidence.
Ultimately, this experience was about more than just the tasks performed. By weaving together creative collaboration and joyful celebration, the visit created a space where generations could learn from one another.
Both the students and the elders were left with lasting, meaningful memories and a deeper appreciation for the “kampong spirit” and warmth of our community.
